SummaryIn our tale The Nun’s Priest, the Priest is telling the other about a lady who has a farm within her farm she has several chickens. The rooster is named Chanticleer and his favorite hen is Perdelote. Chanticleer is sleeping peacefully one night when he has a dream about a fox coming to get the chickens. When he wakes he tells Perdelote about his dream and how much he is worried about it. She tells him that dreams don't come true and that he shouldn’t be worried about it. He rebuttals her with a story of two men traveling. These two men were trying to get a hotel room but there weren’t many available. They decide to split up and look for single rooms. One man got a room the other found himself sleeping in a barn. As they sleep the man in the room has a dream that the man in the barn is dead and he tells the man in the room where his body can be found. He tells him it will be by the gate of the town in a cart of manure. The man wakes from the dream and heads off in search of his friend. When he gets to the barn he calls for his friend with no answer. The lady of the barn said that his friend has already left early that morning. He doesn’t believe her, he remembers his dream and starts to worry. He goes to the front gate to check for his friend. Just like the dream said he found his friend’s body in the manure cart. He was killed for his gold. Perdelote huffs at Chanticleer's story and decisions to tell her own. She tells of a king. The king has a nurse who had a dream of the king being murdered. The king was only seven so nothing happened. Chanticleer tries to tell her again that dreams are to be feared. He reminds her of the bible and of Daniel then asks again here Daniel would be without dreams to warn. He tells of Joseph and the pharaoh.Chanticleer decides to let Perdelote win this round and tries to forget the dream. All the chickens start to head back to the coop. Chanticleer being the rooster goes in last but in the dark he sees two yellow eyes. He freezes and realises what is about to happen. He only has a few seconds to decide what he is going to do and in that second he lets out a crow as loud as he can. The fox runs off with Chanticleer and as the other chickens run and panic, Perdolote sees what has happened and kills herself in a fire nearby. The farmer hears what is going on and runs out with her family. The whole family grabs guns, dogs and anything they may need for a fox hunt.

The significance Discuss the significance of the tale to the society during the time period it was written in. What is the Significance of the tale to the modern time period? Be sure to include examples of any of the types of irony. The significance of this tale during the time period it was written in, is the fact of religion. They believe in the church that your dreams are true and not to doubt them. The significance of the tale now a days can be similar. In the LDS religion the Prophet and the other leaders of the church, have dreams or visions about things that are and will happen in the church. In my own word, some types of irony from the text is when the rooster Chanticleer has a dream about him getting attacked by a fox. His wife Pertelote tells him differently and he believes her. Well that day he ended up getting attacked by a fox just like his dream said. |
